Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord.... However, the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose.” (GIRM, No. 162)
At Mass: The EMHC assists the priest in the distribution of Holy Communion
At a medical facility or private home: The EMHC brings Holy Communion to those parishioners who are unable to attend Mass due to age, physical challenges or illness, and who are confined to their homes, a rehabilitation center, nursing home, or a hospital.
